Program Overview
Prepare to join the surgical team! This intensive 1-year program commencing in January will prepare you to join the surgical team and promote further career opportunities in healthcare. The 7:00 am to 3:00 pm class–clinical schedule will permit you to work the evening shift or weekends. The program will focus on surgical instrumentation and techniques, technological sciences for the surgical technologist, clinical supervision and practicum. An overview of electricity, physics, robotics and safe patient practices will be provided. The peri-operative role of the surgical technologist, basic health sciences, surgical mediated computer instruction and clinical simulations will be emphasized. The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by
CAAHEP.

- Anatomy and Physiology
- Microbiology

- Letters of recommendation (3)
- Employment History, preferably in a healthcare setting

Program Highlights
The Surgical Technology Program is being implemented in three phases by certified surgical technologists, expert operating room nurses, and educators from Stony Brook University, which includes the Medical Center and the Health Sciences Center. Some of the courses include an introduction to computers, instruction in basic health sciences, orientation to surgical technology, basic instrumentation, the peri-operative role, clinical internship, technological sciences for the surgical technologist and professional development. The School of Nursing and the Medical Center are part of the Stony Brook University complex. There are 504 beds in the tertiary facility and over 18 operating rooms where you will have the opportunity to assist general and major surgeries.
Clinicals: Ambi-Surg Center and main hospital operating rooms. Students will be required to scrub, assist circulate and second assist.
